Summary

In the plenary sittings held on Tuesday 16, Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 May 2023, the Speaker Anita Among asked government to regulate interest rates in the market to cushion citizens against exorbitant charges on loans, following the brutal killing of Uttam Bhandari, a city moneylender by a Police officer, Ivan Wabwire. The Attorney General, Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka, was asked to re-introduce the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Bill, 2016, following its annulment by the Constitutional Court on 5th May 2023 due to lack of quorum. Parliament passed the 2023/2024 National Budget valued at Shs52.7 trillion, after a marathon sitting chaired by Speaker Anita Among that commenced at 8 a.m. These and more in the plenary round-up.
